The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is behind the campaign that will coincide with Armed Forces Day, which takes place on Saturday 27 June. Using the hashtag #SaluteOurForces across various social media platforms, CIOB will look to promote different careers within construction and construction management that those who have left the armed forces could move into.
The CIOB states that the UK construction industry will require just under 224,000 new recruits by 2019. To address this shortfall in personnel, it is targeting the armed forces, with around 20,000 soldiers leaving the army ready to embark on a new career every year.
In particular, the campaign will aim to encourage ex-soldiers to get into construction management, with these roles most in demand. According to the CIOB, as growth returns to the construction industry, it is predicted that almost 17,000 managers are going to be needed to enable companies to deliver on the increasing number of projects they are taking on.
Commenting on the #SaluteOurForces campaign, Bridget Bartlett, deputy chief executive at the CIOB, said: “Men and women who have served in the military often possess excellent leadership, team working, project management and problem solving skills, all of which are highly sought after in the construction industry.
“There are plenty of opportunities for those leaving the armed forces to begin a new career in construction and that is not limited to trade skills but also at the management level.”
Two companies have already proved the worth in exploring this area for recruitment opportunities, Building.co.uk reported. Firstly, house builder Persimmon Homes has recently retrained around 500 ex-military personnel to work for the company, while contractor Morgan Sindall has conducted research which found that roughly 10 per cent of its workforce either have direct or family connections to the military.
